What to do if it rains on my wedding day?

“Rain on a wedding day means good luck!”

YES!! It’s going to rain on your wedding day!

What if it rains on your wedding day? You lucky people!

(OMG this wedding photographer is mad!)

But stick with me.

All the years I have been photographing weddings, some of the most memorable I have photographed has rained, and rained hard!

But our guests won’t have a nice time!?

Not True!

There is an atmosphere, a buzz, warmth and love that comes over wedding guests when it rains. Guests are enticed into huddling together, talking! Having fun meeting new people from other families and friend groups that they would otherwise miss if they had space to spread out in the warm sun, in a big venue garden.

But we won’t get those really nice photos of us outside, or even important group photos.

Not True !

As I said at the top of this blog post, “You Lucky People!”

A rainy windy day, with stormy clouds and even a hazy presence in the air, can make for some really dramatic, romantic, and unique images to cherish.

The weather is the one and only thing a wedding couple is never able to control. I understand that after all those months or even years of planning you and your guests are hoping for a lovely sunny day to celebrate together. But from my humble experience, this is something you cannot get hung up on.

It’s so important; when you see the weather forecast close to the wedding day, that if it’s a high chance of adverse weather, you need to stay completely positive, make a mental note that you are there for each other, and trust that everyone around you will make your day just as special, especially your wedding photographer! ;0)

I am always game for a rainy day!

What if it rains on your wedding day? I get this buzz when I know I’m going into a wedding day where I will be blessed with super soft flattering light, dramatic skies for your portraits and the knowledge that I will be capturing you and your guests being close, intimate and happy.

One of the most memorable 30 minutes I have ever photographed in my career…

It was on one of the wettest days I have ever worked on. The wedding of Issy & Anton.

Beautiful image of the bride and groom on a Victorian bridge in the pouring rain. What to do if it rains on my wedding day?
I wanted this shot so badly. A beautiful Victorian Bridge in Stowe Park Buckinghamshire. Torrential Rain, me without an umbrella, and my couple being awesome and embracing their wedding day!

Issy was a super fun and creative bride. The creative thought that went into her day was nothing short of remarkable. A beautiful yurt, in a beautiful garden, next to a beautiful country park.

A month prior I visited the area to do a reccy. We walked around in the sunshine and in my head was shot after shot of amazing photographs.

Then the night before I checked the weather forecast. A heavy storm! I called Issy up and we had a lovely long chat. She was so calm and not phased by the storm which was so amazing! We all knew what was going to happen the following day, all the contingency plans were in place, and how we were all going to stay super positive.

With the correct planning prior to the day, you, your photographer and other suppliers can all tailor your wedding day to accommodate adverse weather.

And the wedding party is always on hand to help out because they all love you so much and want you to have fun!

But back to the most memorable moment of my photography career!

Issy wished to walk with her dad across open fields (a 30-minute walk I would like to add) to the church where she was going to marry the love of her life. During the morning I heard a few people mention to her “Why don’t you just go in the Range Rover and stay dry?”

Issy wanted to walk! And so did I!

I knew this was going to be something special before we set off.

It was pouring with rain! With Issy wearing her welly boots, her dad holding a large umbrella, and me with a rain mac on, I witnessed the most incredible daddy-daughter time I have witnessed. Just us three walking across these beautiful fields spending the last few minutes together before she got married. It was magical and incredibly precious for me to be the only witness to capture their time together.
